Governor Cuomo Announces New York Selected for Federal Program that will Give Thousands of Low-Income Children Free School Meals

Yesterday was a big day for the children of New York.

Governor Cuomo announced the State has been selected for an innovative pilot permitting enrollment in the free school meals program using direct certification through Medicaid.

Joel Berg, Executive Director of the New York City Coalition Against Hunger, said, "New York’s participation in this essential pilot program is a win-win, which will bring more federal money into the state while feeding more hungry children.

According to data posted on the web site of the City’s Human Resources Administration just before the close of business on Friday, the City removed 13,015 people from the federal Food Stamp rolls in November of 2011. Despite soaring poverty and unemployment in New York City, Food Stamp Program participation has decreased in six of the last 12 months in the city, even though it has increased significantly during that time in the rest of New York State and nationwide.
